Hello, hikers,
There are some new hikers in the group and on the email list, so I felt it
time to go over the rules for preparation and safety to help ensure everyone
enjoys themselves in the outdoors and on the trails:
1) The group is open to women of all hiking abilities (and their kids as
long as they are capable of the specific hike); however, please choose hikes
that are of the caliber that you are capable of.
2) Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots, and have them ready for wet
weather/stream crossings, and muddy trails.
3) Bring/wear clothing that will keep you warm, dry, and wind protected...it
being the Pacific Northwest, the weather can change rapidly and without
warning.
4) Bring a day pack or backpack to carry your gear, lunch, etc. in.
5) If there is any chance of rain on the day of the hike, DO NOT wear cotton
clothing items.....there are many outdoor shops in the area that carry an
array of wind proof/water proof clothing/jackets or other items that will
keep you warm if it gets wet, etc....wool, polypropylene, and Gore-Tex are a
few of the clothing items that are recommended. Bring these items NO MATTER
WHAT, and be prepared to layer them as needed/necessary.
6) Bring a lunch, snacks, water, and other beverages as you want (no
alcohol).... we always eat on the trail.
7) Bring sunglasses.
8) Bring a hat and mittens/gloves.
9) Optional items include sun screen, trekking poles or other walking
devices, a plastic bag to put your dirty boots in after the hike, and extra
clothing, shoes or socks to wear after the hike on the way home.
10) If you plan on driving to the trailhead, please purchase a Northwest
Forest Trail Pass (REI and GI Joes carry them).
11) Bring $$$ to help defray the cost of gasoline for those that drive.
I think that's it, and I hope to see some of you on the trails...yes, even
through the winter months!
Happy Holidays,
Kathy
