Hello hikers,
Cloudy skies and a few patches of blue greeted us at the trailhead. Only a hand full of cars
dotted the parking lot (a good reason to get out and hike this time of year). Layers of clothing donned,
boots on, and trekking poles in hand, Fayla, Alegra, and I headed off. The Wallace Falls trail offers
some easy going, as well as a good workout. First fork..taking a right and enjoying the river flowing
by, we soon find ourselves gaining a little moderate elevation, moving away from the waters edge. It's
great having the trail to ourselves (:-)! Ah, the top (for now), as we make our way down to the bridge
and a crossing of the Wallace River...a short rest on the bridge, and then a glance UP to our next
destinations...the lower, middle, and upper falls. Soon at the lower falls, we head to the edge to
enjoy the view, the falls and stream below swelling from the recent melted snow and rains. Next stop,
the middle falls, just ahead a hop, skip, and a jump up the way..impressive! Now for the workout..
phew..the next 1/2 mile or so brings rocks, and roots, and steps, oh, my! Taking many short rests to
socialize and catch our breath, we finally see the lunch stop...the upper falls and trails end. I
unloaded the treats for the day (sorry for those that didn't make the outing but there was more for
us)....home made holiday cookies and candy (so much for losing weight on this one). Just as we sat
down to enjoy each others company and lunch, a light rain joined us. Rested and full, we packed up
and headed back down, the roots, rocks, and steps in reverse fashion now. The rain is falling with
more intensity, and many puddles have appeared on the trail...oh, well, at least it waited until
the way back! Ah, the parking lot....home ward bound (but not 'till after finishing the cookies).
A great time was had by all..stay tuned for details of January's hike...
Happy Hiking,
Kathy.
